Optimisation

Optimisation : means you can make the product look the best it possibly can. You'll need to consider the purpose of the animation, how the colour, size, frame, compression and export file fit the purpose. You should use vector rather than bitmap for this. Bitmaps: when you zoom in on a raster/bitmap file, the pixels become visible as tiny squares, and the overall effect is rather blurred. Vector : vector graphics store the image information as a series of coordinates (vectors), and when zooming in on the image, it does not blur/pixelate. 10 ways to optimise and animated GIF file:  trimming animation  reducing image size  save for web reduce the amount of frames number of colours  which colour reduction algorithm to choose? Dithering  web snap, lossy, transparency and interlaced compare original and optimised versions  preview, save preset, and optimise to file size  Exporting the animation: the file format must correlate with the...

Pixar: Themes Characters Environments (when and where the animation takes place) Styles  Narratives Pixar from rubyshefras Event driven or character driven?  One area to explore is whether the animation is event-driven or character-driven.  For example, many Disney films are character-driven, and one of the commercial reasons behind this is the flogging of expensive merchandise to brainwashed/stupid children. In a film like Grave of the Fireflies, however, the characters’ actions are shaped by the context of a firebombing raid on a Japanese village during WWII. This is more of an event-driven narrative, even though the film focuses on two young protagonists.  Todorov's Equilibrium theory: In a film or story, the power is in a state of equilibrium (balance). However the equilibrium is changed after a disruption, resulting in a disequilibrium. The old equilibrium is broken, and therefore a new one must begin. The Narrative theory stages:...

Uses and targets audiences

Aim: To research the genres, types and uses of digital animation Uses:   Since its inception, animation has been used in many different forms of media, including: How has the target audience evolved with these uses?  Television programmes Children’s animations Film, across many different genres Advertisements Anime and manga Online and viral Animated Films and TV: Traditionally, animated content is associated with younger audiences. Television programmes such as Tom and Jerry and Bugs Bunny, and Disney films from Snow White to Frozen, have been largely pitched at children (though as we know from Unit 1, these films also enjoy large audiences formed of older demographics). Disneyfication: The transformation (as of something real or unsettling) into carefully controlled and safe entertainment or an environment with similar qualities. The French philosopher Jean Baudrillard has called Disneyland the most real place in the US, because it is not pret...

Digital animation: types and techniques

Aim: to research the genres, types and uses of digital animation Different types of animation; traditional ( 2D, cel animation, hand drawn)  2D ( vector-based) 3D ( CGI - computer generated imagery, computer animation) Motion graphics ( typography, animated logos)  Stop motion ( Claymation, cut-outs)  Line drawing  Rotoscoping  Live action  Line-Drawing : a hand drawn sketch that moves frame by frame so that the shape evolves and moves. it is commonly used in contemporary advertising. Created using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe flash and Lightbox. Scalable Vector Graphics ( SVG) are animated by code.  Fantasmagorie ( Emile Cohl 1908)  'Line boils' is the wobble of hand-drawn lines, particularly noticeable when characters are redrawn in every frame even though they are standing still. Early 20th century animators considered line boil an imperfection that should be minimised.  A-Ha - Take on Me was a half animated half fil...
